Here are six key points concerning the event:
1. Meteorology department officials said the tide, which was 4.38 metres high on Thursday, got a thrust due to heavy breeze caused by cyclonic storm — Nanauk.
2. High tides near the Gateway of India caused waterlogging in the low lying areas resulting in heavy traffic jams in the city.
3. Fifteen security guards have been posted at Gateway of India in south Mumbai from 10am to 6pm and will prohibit people from going near the sea.
4. Six teams have been made for sensitive areas in the metropolis where each will comprise members of fire brigade personnel, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and lifeguards.
5. A special disaster control mechanism has been put in place, where a special team will be attending to emergency calls from citizens three hours before and after the scheduled time of the high tide.
6. The monsoon, however, is still far away from the coastal city. It should have reached Mumbai by June 10, but according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) southwest monsoon will advance into remaining parts of central Arabian sea Konkan during next 48 hours.
