MUMBAI: A 45-year-old man was allegedly lynched to death by a mob at Nalasopara on Thursday night.
The mob mistook him for a thief. Mohammed Ansari, a resident of Virar was seen loitering around the Dhaniv Baugh area of Nalasopara (east) at around 10.30 pm.
A group of youngsters who were engaged in a chat found Ansari's movement suspicious.
They intercepted him and accused him of planning a robbery in the locality.
Even before Ansari could explain, they assaulted him with iron rods and bamboo lying nearby. He collapsed on the road and the youngsters fled from the spot.
Ansari was declared dead before admission to the hospital. The Valiv police reached the spot and carried out a combing operation.
Early Friday the police arrested Suraj Singh (24), Arvind Yadav (21), Lalit Dixit (25) and Kuldeep Giri (27). They have been booked under section 302 for murder, 143 and 147 (rioting),148 (rioting with weapons) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC. They have been remanded to three days police custody by the Vasai sessions court.
