MUMBAI A committee headed by a chief engineer will be set up to ascertain if more toll nakas in the state can be scrapped, public works minister Chhagan Bhujbal said
Tolls were introduced in the state around 20 years ago to give impetus to infrastructure development in the state. Bhujbal said till recently 67 toll nakas were shut as the concession period had come to an end and the government has now announced to scrap another 44 toll nakas even before the concession period is over. The committee will study integration of tolls and if more tolls can be done away with,'' said Bhujbal while replying to a calling attention motion in the legislative council.
Congress legislator Sanjay Dutt who raised the issue said Rs 11,403.58 crore has been spent on 45 projects and the cost is to be recovered through tolls over a 15-20 year period. However, within two to five years the toll operators had recovered Rs 9704.8 crore and by the time the concession period comes to an end an amount of Rs 8,000 crore would have been recovered in excess of the cost incurred.
Bhujbal said under the new policy it has been recommended that the distance between two tolls must be 45-50 kms. The matter, he said, is now before the Bombay high court.
He said currently the profit sharing is 75% to the government and 25% to the toll operator.
