MUMBAI: The legal fight to get Dawood Ibrahim aide Muzzakir Muddassar alias Munna Jhingada deported to India from Thai authorities further got strengthen when on Friday the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate granted the Mumbai police permission to collect the DNA samples of Jhingada's kin.

The court also said that the police can collect the blood samples of Jhingada's family members but they should not use it as evidence in the case. Police said that the order will help them prove that Jhingada is Indian national and very much a criminal from Mumbai who fled away in 2000. Crime branch team with the help of Jogeshwari police will be collecting the blood samples of Jhingada's family members who stay in Jogeshwari.

In 2012, the efforts of the Mumbai crime branch officials and the prompt move by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)had yielded desired results with the Thai authorities assuring India to hand Jhingada but Pakistan authorities too had claimed his custody saying Jhingada was a Pak National.

India and Pakistan had been at loggerheads over the gangster since 2011, when the authorities there applied to Thai officials, asking for Jhingada, who they claimed was a Pakistani. The Pakistan authorities on behest of Dawood even submitted allegedly forged papers of Jhingada, including a Pakistani passport.

Jhingada was arrested by the Thai police on charges of attempt to kill fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan in 2000. In the firing, Rajan escaped but his aide, Rohit Verma, was killed. Jhinga da , with associates Rashid Malbari and Gurpeet Singh Bullar, was arrested and he was sent to jail for eight years. Jhingada has completed his 8 years sentence in Thai jail but due to legal fight over his nationality he is still lurking in Thai jail.

The DNA samples are additional evidence we will be sending to prove that Jhingada is Indian. Earlier we have send documents including Jhingada's background, finger prints, red corner noti ce and past criminal cases and which are enough for convincing the Thai authorities and we hope this time we will succeed in getting him.''said Shalini Sharma senior inspector of Extradiation cell who is pursuing the Jhingada case.
