Bhendi Bazaar in south Mumbai is one of the most densely populated localities in the city with creaking buildings standing cheek by jowl and a mass of humanity spilling all around. For any town planner, this is an urban nightmare. The locality is also a strong hold of the Bohra community; several thousands live here in cramped tenements or run commercial establishments.
A few years ago, the Sydena on a visit to Bhendi Bazaar, was shocked to see the pathetic living conditions and decided to provide better houses for its residents—mainly Muslims of various sects, 80 per cent of whom belong to his community.
The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Project, which is executing the mammoth project, has an enviable task before it. The project will rehabilitate 3,200 families and 1,200 commercial shops. Seventeen towers will be built after 250 old low rise buildings are razed. Of the 17 towers, 13 will be exclusively for rehousing existing residents. The remaining four towers will be sold to buyers at market rate. Each rehab building will be between 30 and 45 storeys, while the free sale towers will be over 50 floors.
The project, however, faces a slew of problems. Some residents have alleged they are being arm-twisted to move out. Recently, the high court threw out a petition, claiming involvement of the underworld in forcing tenants out.
Last month's Supreme Court order on retaining mandatory open and recreational spaces around skyscrapers in Mumbai is likely to impact the Bhendi Bazaar project.
Its planners should iron out the obstacles and ensure the project comes up quickly.
