Only Farooque Shaikh noticed the lonesome child in the room

MUMBAI: The incident dates back to 1981. A little girl was sitting alone at a party to celebrate the success of 'Chashme Buddoor', feeling a trifle forlorn amid the bustling crowd of elders. Suddenly she looked up to find a smiling gentleman approaching her with a slice of cake. Of the entire cast and crew, it was Farooque Shaikh alone who noticed the lonesome five-year-old and came up to keep her company.

The child was Shona Urvashi who went on to direct her childhood idol in Saas Bahu aur Sensex (2008). Her mother Jayshree Makhija was co-producer of Chashme Buddoor. "Shaikh Sahab was aware of everybody in the room. Only he saw this little person who was awake well past her bedtime and made this sensitive gesture. I was in awe of him," Urvashi said at a memorial held to honour Shaikh in Mumbai Thursday.

When they met as professionals this time around, Shaikh typically teased the young lady for her Anglicised accent and demeanour. She was one of the lucky few to savour his generous hospitality every time the festival of Eid came around. "He would send the lovely biryani that was prepared in his house. Shaikh Sahab never organized food in small quantities, it was a whole carload for the entire unit. When he bought mithai for us, he purchased the entire quantity in the shop. He was so full of life that it's hard to reconcile that he's gone. He was the perfect gentleman, a father figure whom I shall miss tremendously," she said.
