Water needs urgent attention from industry and govt: CII

MUMBAI: So far India has taken water for granted. But the way the nation, its population and industry is growing, water will become a major crisis in the near future. It is high time water gets the urgent attention it deserves from both the industry and government, opined leaders from across the industry in the first CII Water Conclave held in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Rajiv Jalota, IAS, additional municipal commissioner, MCGM, said, "There is a need to make recycling compulsory for industry in Maharashtra because 40% of the water industry uses can be recycled which means that 40% water they use can be saved. The Water Resources Regulatory Body formed in 2006 is working on how water recycling can be made compulsory in certain areas." He stressed that recycling not only contributes to the nation, but also makes good business sense considering that the way we are going, water will soon become a scarce resource.

Earlier, Ninad Karpe, chairman, CII Maharashtra State Council & CEO & managing director, Aptech Limited, in his welcome address set the conclave into motion when he said, "India has 14% population of the world but only 4% of its usable water. 85% water is used for farming, 10% for industry and 5% for domestic use. While on one hand, the competition between these three is increasing by the day given the ever increasing demand of this precious element, the supply on the other hand is reducing on account of increasing population and pollution due to inefficient human activities. The news is not good because as per the World Watch Institute in Washington, India will be a highly water stressed country from 2020 onwards."

Arun Nanda, chairman, CII National Committee on Water & director Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, "India spends nearly 10 billion dollars per year on treating water borne diseases. In many rural areas girls drop out of school because they have to ferry water for the house. It is true that water is a big issue yet what we need to remember is that it is not an impossible issue. There is a solution. But to solve it we need consciousness to first see and understand the problem." He stressed on the need for industries to do water audit and for society to open up to conservation.

Nanda went on to add, "The biggest challenge is mindset. As an industry body we have to do things for ourselves and be vocal about it and say that this is an issue that cuts across every member of society. We are running huge deficits. Besides a handful, there has never been any major investment on water since independence. This nation needs a special water authority."

R Mukundan, chairman, CII western region & managing director, Tata Chemicals Ltd., said, "Water is a common resource. Water is not just about quantity, but also quality. If you keep only interest of one of stakeholder in mind, it will only be a half solution. It's a multi-stakeholder issue and an issue of quality and quantity." He further added that we have to cross the hurdles of 'denial, bargaining, despair so that we reach the final stage of 'acceptance' of water being a major issue for the country. "If we do not do something quick, water riots will happen in India soon," he warned.

HN Daruwalla, conference chairman, convenor, CII Maharashtra Energy & Environment Panel & Executive vice president and business head, (E&E Services), Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd said, "Water is a prime requirement for life and yet one of the most neglected issue. India faces huge challenges because we have very little water and have to feed a huge population, not to mention the need of the industry. The way to go about this is water management. It makes good business sense. When it comes to water, we have to go in for the mantra of 'conserve, generate, regulate and communicate'."

In a panel discussion on the 'Pro-Active role of Industry in Improving National Water Scenario', the moderator, Pradeep Bhargava, chairman - CII Environmental & Recycling Council & director, Cummins India Ltd., said, "In pursuing what is urgent, we forget what is important till the important becomes urgent. Water is one such issue. Though the industry uses less water today, in the next 40 years nearly 40% of the total water in the country would be used by the industry. The world has limited water. It is time to focus on it as an issue of utmost importance."

Raghupathy S, executive director, CII - Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, said, "If you really look at it, the biggest threat to production and sustenance is water. A bigger threat is how the industry positions itself with regard to water. If we focus on water starting now in some time the industry should be able to harvest their water needs themselves by various ways and become water independent. Some industries are seen as competing with society for water. These industries are digging their own grave by not focusing on water. You have to proactively invest in industry. And as it stands, investment in water technology is very less."

The day long CII conclave saw a large attendance from the captains of the Indian Industry.
