Though the accused, Damu Gupta (28), refused to confess that he had swallowed the chain to avoid suspicion, the police conducted a digital x-ray, which showed the chain lodged in his abdomen. The police are now forcing him to have bananas and medicines to get the chain out.
The incident took place on December 22 when Dr Sheetal Kamble, a resident of Bandra, was travelling on Vidharbha Express. She was in the S7 compartment when Gupta snatched the 11gm chain she was wearing and made to escape. The ornament is valued at Rs 30,000.
Alarmed by Kamble's cries for help, her fellow passengers chased Gupta and caught him. To evade thrashing, Gupta vehemently claimed that he was innocent and the passengers, too, could not find any chain on him, the police said. But one traveller said he had noticed Gupta swallowing something and assumed that it must have been the chain, the police added.
Gupta has been handed over to the Kalyan GRP. "The accused did not confess to the crime. Initially, we conducted a regular X-ray but nothing was found. So on Wednesday, we conducted a digital X-ray which revealed the chain in Gupta's abdomen," said GRP inspector Sampat Nirmal.
N B Vaze of the GRP added, "From the way the accused refused to confess, we suspect that he is a habitual offender."
