MUMBAI: An autorickshaw driver who ferried commuters about during daytime and burgled shops at night was busted after he got involved in an accident and unwittingly led the victim to his lair.

The driver, Prakash Gujjar (24), stays in Aarey Colony and is also an electrician. Between December 8 and 18, he and two others burgled two shops in Goregaon. They stole electric switches and sockets worth Rs 48,000 from Mahavir Stores and a smartphone and cash totalling Rs 12,000 from Adinath Traders. Later, Gujjar swapped the SIM card of his own handset with that of the stolen smartphone.

"On December 18, while driving his auto near Mahakali Caves in Andheri (East), he knocked down a motorcyclist Santosh. The motorcycle was damaged and Santosh demanded that Gujjar compensate him. But Gujjar did not have cash on him. So he offered to mortgage his old handset," said investigating officer S M Nimbalkar. "Before pulling out the SIM card from the device, he gave Santosh a missed call. The arrangement was that Santosh would call up on the number later to collect cash from Gujjar and return the phone."

Since the SIM belonged to the owner of Adinath Traders, Gujjar's plan was to destroy it and thwart Santosh's attempts of reaching him. But Adinath's owner went on to deactivate the stolen SIM and acquire a new one. So, when Santosh dialled the number given by Gujjar, he was connected to the shopkeeper.

"Santosh realized that the person on the other end of the line wasn't Gujjar. The shopkeeper told him his establishment had been burgled a few days ago and his smartphone had vanished. Santosh told him about the accident in Andheri (East) and that he had clicked a photo of Gujjar's auto. Santosh sent the photo to the shopkeeper on WhatsApp," said Nimbalkar. The photo had the auto's registration number.

The shopkeeper approached the Goregaon police, who contacted the regional transport office (RTO) and got Gujjar's address. But the address was vague and Gujjar's home could not be traced. A police team also combed a slum in Vile Parle on suspicion that Gujjar had moved there. At last, the police laid a trap outside Aarey Colony at a place where auto drivers usually pick up commuters. Gujjar was nabbed on Tuesday evening. A search of his auto revealed a tool used to commit burglaries. "We are trying to trace his two aides," said senior inspector Arun Jadhav.
