The civic body has shortlisted a plot, measuring 10-15 acres, in Chickoowadi for the stadium. Experts and professionals may be summoned to suggest designs and help the BMC with the project.
"Provisions will be made for both indoor and outdoor games. Children who do not have open spaces to play can get professional training here," said additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas. The construction of the stadium, which would house a swimming pool, club house and library, would cost nearly Rs 20 crore, said a civic official. The construction will begin as soon as the designs are finalized and is expected to be completed in two years. "It will be the only such stadium in the western suburbs," said another official.
The BMC this year has set aside over Rs 300 crore for the development of open spaces with respect to sports activities. For the development of other grounds, the BMC is in talks with the Sports Authority of India. "In Borivli, we plan to instal iron bars and also set up running and walking tracks," said an official.
