The corridor criss-crosses above the suburban railway tracks and narrow stretches of road where traffic, even on regular days, is a nightmarish experience. An official from Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd said, "Despite hurdles, the pace of work we have achieved is testimony to ingenious planning and hard work."
Take the case of laying the bridge above the tracks at Andheri, which took 15 months to complete. It was for the first time in India that a Metro corridor would intersect a railway corridor spanning across six lines. The official explained, "We only had four hours to undertake the work post-midnight to ensure traffic was not disturbed."
Around 300 people were deployed to manually remove the soil for construction of piers. The official said, "Girders were transported at night to prevent traffic jams. The workers had to enter the site after 12am and move out soon after the block period ended."
"Three huge concrete mixers were kept at the station. Concrete was pushed at high pressure during these four hours to build the piers."
The right-of-way was a major problem. "In Andheri, the roof of Castro, an old one-storey building, was about 200 mm from where the base of the Metro steel bridge had to be laid. We convinced the owner to let us carry out the work on condition that we will re-build the roof in its original shape with renewed life-span. A similar solution was replicated near a mosque, whose minarets were coming in the way."
At Ghatkopar, the Metro station's approved design could not be implemented as all foundations were touching shops or adjacent properties. As residents were inconvenienced, the work could be done only between 5 and 8am. The official said, "We had to change the design, carry out traffic management and ensure strict safety measures as it is a crowded place."
"At Navrang Cinema, we changed the design, shifted the sewer and conducted a mock-drill to ensure that the girders don't get stuck when the actual movement of material starts along the narrow route."
