A committee consisting of the joint commissioner, additional commissioner and deputy commissioner of traffic police, has sent recommendation for the equipment to the director general of state police (DGP), whose nod is now awaited. "Outdated breath analyzers are likely to produce erroneous results. The new generation of breath analyzers can take a user's photograph and the built-in GPS device provides the location where the test was taken. A colour printout with the exact breath alcohol concentration will be taken. Our officer will manually fill in the offender's name and address," said a senior official.
This year, more than 4,600 motorists have been imprisoned for drunk driving and driving licences of over 3,000 motorists have been suspended. Over 1.03 lakh drunk driving cases were recorded in the city between June 2007 to December 2013.
Modern speed guns with a video camera will allow police to collect a high-resolution image that identifies the vehicle-make and registration number. The gadget also automatically prints out a speeding ticket, allowing officers to avoid hand-written paperwork and process more offences. The cameras also have the ability to plot GPS location every time they are used and when they detect a speeding vehicle. "Gadgets equipped with night vision would be preferred. Speed guns with advanced technology can capture number plates of vehicles from a distance of 300 metres," said an official.
The cops also want more barricades, cones, fluorescent jackets and electronic batons. This year, 4742 motorists were caught for driving without licences, officials said.
