MUMBAI: A watchman at a cremation ground in Jalgaon led cops to men who murdered a female doctor; days after the body had turned to ashes.
A police team in Jalgaon also acted swiftly in connecting the dots when it received two different complaints. One from a doctor about his missing wife, also a doctor and one from the watchman from a crematory who said a young ambulance driver at the civil hospital cremated his "grandmother" but didn't return to collect her ashes even two days later last March.
A session's judge in Jalgaon on Wednesday, December 18, accepted special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam's plea for a death sentence to the main accused.
After a trial that began this May, Jalgaon sessions sentenced to death by hanging, the 28-year-old ambulance driver Yuvraj Sable for the brutal murder of the woman doctor Vijaya Choudhary at the Jalgaon civil hospital last March.
Judge S K Ambekar also found Sable's brother-in-law 24 year old Pankaj Sandanshiv guilty of conspiracy and murdering Dr Choudhary a medical officer at the civil hospital.
The duo had hatched a conspiracy along with their friend Gulab Sindhi (26) to rob the 45-year-old doctor off her gold ornaments on March 12, 2012, said special Public Prosecutor Nikam. The case straight from a murder whodunit rested in court on the evidence provided by Gulab who was made an approver.
Yuvraj used to carry dead bodies to the hospital for post mortem. On March 12, the doctor wore gold ornaments as she had to attend a wedding soon after her duty hours ended. Yuvraj called her under the pretence that a body awaited post mortem at the room which was in the far end of the hospital building. The doctor arrived at the room to find the three men, who locked the door from inside. When she enquired where the body was they said it was in the next room. As she began walking towards it, she was hit and fell, Yuvraj sat on her and strangulated her with his bare hands, said Nikam. They removed her ornaments, covered her with a white cloth and took her in the ambulance to the cremation grounds managed by the city corporation. A watchman at the ground asked whose body it was, Yuvraj informed him it was his grandmother's body but did not furnish any details as required. With the watchman distracted with the arrival of other bodies and mourners, the trio cremated the doctor and left.
The doctor's husband, also a medical officer at the hospital lodged a missing complaint with the police the next day. The watchman complained to the civic authorities two days later that Yuvraj never returned to collect his grandmother's ashes nor did he fill in the requisite form. He was asked to go to the cops who in turn got suspicious and picked up Yuvraj for questioning. Yuvraj once arrested, immediately confessed to the crime. He had started rumours about her absence to malign her image and thwart any suspicions said Nikam.
Nikam, appointed as special PP at the request of the medical community examined over 20 witnesses.
Yuvraj's defence advocate S K Sharma denied all charges as did the lawyer for Pankaj. Nikam however relied laregely on the approver's testimony as a clincher and said the crime was ''preplanned and heinous and qualifies for death sentence.'' The judge granted death sentence to Yuvraj but sentenced Pankaj to life sentence for conspiracy and murder. A jeweller who was also tried for buying the stolen ornaments was sentenced to two years.
