Marathon feat after gold grind

MUMBAI: He polishes gold for 12 hours a day in tough conditions in a Mumbai godown, getting just four hours of sleep. But the drudgery of his life has only fuelled Abbas Shaikh's dream run.

Shaikh, 29, who has been working from the age of 14 to beat poverty, won the 75-km Bangalore Ultra marathon on November 10 clocking 7.23 hours, a phenomenal effort considering that he is not a professional. For the Bengal boy, who put on running shoes only four years ago, marathons are an obession today. Such is his dedication that he once worked till 4am, freshened up and set the pace for a friend running 21km. After the race, Shaikh was back at work.

For someone who shot off the blocks by tailing a group of runners, Shaikh is eyeing the Mumbai marathon and says he is ready for the grind.
