MUMBAI: A gang of four robbers who targeted passengers hitching a ride on the Western and Eastern Express Highways and Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway has been arrested by the crime branch of the Thane rural police. The arrested are Kuljit Bakshi (30), a Pune resident, Ashok Upadhyaya (28) from Allahabad, Tejas Wakhode (24) from Buldhana and Pawankumar Kanojia (19), who stays in Nalasopara (E).

The gang used to hire vehicles from Pune, Allahabad and Buldhana for travel and then beat up the driver mid way on highways. The robbers would then dump the driver and flee with the vehicle. They would pick up people seeking lift and rob them at knifepoint. They would also force passengers having credit/debit cards to withdraw cash from ATMs, said inspector Kishore Khairnar.

The police have recovered two cars and cash and valuables worth Rs 11.93 lakh. The accused's roles in robberies on Western and Eastern Express highways are also being probed. After a rise in number of highway robberies was reported this year, the police found that in most cases stolen cars had been used. Cops said six robberies registered at Mira Road, Kashimira, Valiv in Vasai (E), Nalasopara and Kasa police stations had been cracked.
