Parents taking tots for IQ tests to give headstart in rat race

Rakshit Dhingra was just two and a half when his parents decided to uncover his 'inborn intelligence'. Each of Rakshit's tubby little fingers was placed on a small biometric scanner and the prints run through a software programme. A few days later, a 34-page report detailing Rakshit's innate abilities (is he 'word smart' or 'number smart'?) and 'best-suited' career options were mailed to his father Nitin. "It is good to have a heads up. The world is becoming very competitive," says the Delhi-based software engineer.

Keen to discover future Sachins and Steve Jobs, many parents are taking their tots for a new test called the DMIT (Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test). The 10-minute test, which costs Rs 5,000, aims to discover genetic potential based on a study of fingerprints. The test has become especially popular in tier two cities with the youngest client just nine months old.

Clues from fingerprints

The DMIT analysis is based on the premise that the right hand corresponds to the left brain and vice versa, and that each finger represents a different lobe of the brain and, therefore, a different function

Researchers developed it in Taiwan in the 1990s. It came to India in 2011

Said to be most effective for toddlers as development can be moulded accordingly
