Naresh Dahibhavkar , president , Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti , said that for the past many years all idols were not allowed to pass under the Sukh Sagar FOB. "Now the procession will go straight on the main road , without a right turn at Sukh Sagar," he said .
The BMC recently released a Ganpati immersion route plan in co-ordination with the traffic department . It identified 78 immersion points , 21 less than it did last year . All potholes on the immersion routes will need to be filled by September 9.
While the BMC claims to have filled 100% of the potholes , mandals say they will hold the civic body responsible for mishaps on pothole-riddled routes .
Last year , an idol had fallen because of a pothole in Lalbaug .
"The BMC says 100% of the work is done , but work in bylanes like Dilip Gupte Road in Dadar , Kamathipura and Kumbhawada is still on ," Dahibhavkar said .
In Wadala , which is under Mumbai Port Trust jurisdiction , 45 mandals will host the festival and pothole-filling work is still on .
Mandals have suggested that the BMC deploy its own teams on various routes with pockmarked roads .
"We have instructed our road engineers to monitor these routes ," additional municipal commissioner S V R Srinivas said . "The cell numbers of the engineers and road contractors will be given to senior civic officials . This is the first time that we have come out with a micro-level intervention plan for immersions ."
The Lalbaugcha Raja immersion route will commence from Bharat Mata and culminate at Girgaum Chowpatty via Chinchpokli , Byculla station , JJ Hospital and Prarthna Samaj .
Top cop meets Ganesh groups
Police commissioner Satya Pal Singh on Tuesday held a review meeting of Ganpati mandals in north Mumbai to alert them about security measures and hear grievances. The meeting was also attended by three local MLAs.
There are 1,500 sarvajanik Ganpati mandals from Dahisar to Goregaon. Mandals were asked to form batches of volunteers for security. No parking would be allowed within 100 metres of pandals. CCTV cameras and metal detectors should be used.
While some mandals complained about securing police permission for DJs, NGO activists protested against noise pollution.
MLA Vinod Ghoshalkar said that mandals were told about advertisements, which are permitted up to a distance of 100 metres upon the payment of a Rs 125 charge to the civic body.
Marine Drive locals upset
Marine Drive residents say they will oppose the BMC plan to allow a sarvajanik Ganesh mandal in their neighbourhood after 10 years. The Akhil Churchgate Savrajanik Utsav Mandal has applied for permissions with the BMC to install a pandal on D-Road in Marine Drive.
"For the past 10 years the police have withdrawn mandal permissions on D-Road ," Anil Bhatia of the Marine Drive Residents' Association said. "This was necessitated by terrorrelated situations."
D-Road has the Wankhede Stadium.
Mandal president Vicky Rajput said his grandfather formed the mandal in 1968.
"He resided on C-Road and we want to revive the tradition," he said. "We will take the residents' permission as well."
