MUMBAI: A team of Khar policemen tried to arrest a Canadian businessman from his hotel room in the dead of night last week under "political pressure", according to a senior police officer.

The senior officer told TOI on condition of anonymity that the team of cops who landed at 62-year-old Alnoor Jamal's suite at 1.30am on August 29 did not decide to do so on their own. "There was political pressure," he said, adding that it can be verified, if required, by studying the call records of the team's members.

TOI had reported on Tuesday how a group of seven men, mostly in police uniform, reached Jamal's hotel on Marine Drive and sought to arrest him in a cheating case filed by his former Indian business partner, Shobhit Rajan. The case, they said, "was registered under CrPC section 156(3)". The policemen developed cold feet and left after Jamal called up his lawyer and challenged the cop action. Later that day, the sexagenarian complained about the incident.

A police inquiry has been ordered into the episode. Zonal deputy commissioner of police Chhering Dorje, who is conducting the probe, will record the statements of the Khar police team on Thursday. Jamal alleged in his complaint that the "police harassment" he suffered was "at the insistence of Shobhit Rajan". During the inquiry the DCP will examine the circumstances under which the team of Khar policemen went to Jamal's hotel to arrest him.

An officer said that in cases filed under CrPC section 156(3) evidence is first collected and presented before the local DCP before any action is initiated. In Jamal's instance, the officer added, it appeared the Khar police team might not have followed procedures.

There have been complaints and counter-complaints in a realty dispute between Jamal and Rajan. One of Jamal's complaints also mentions Nitesh and Nilesh Rane, cabinet minister Narayan Rane's sons, along with Rajan. Rajan, when contacted on Tuesday, said he would like talk to TOI in his office on Wednesday. Neither Nilesh nor Nitesh responded to repeated queries from TOI.

Rajan's lawyer, Vibhav Krishna, said a magistrate's court had passed an order—on his client's complaint—directing Khar cops to investigate against five persons, including Jamal, and cops were acting on the court's directive.
