MUMBAI: A Delhi-based businessman was arrested by the Mumbai Central GRP for hiring an underage domestic help and bringing her to Mumbai for taking up a job. Pankaj Sharma, 38, the accused, had hired the 14-year-old girl from a domestics placement agency in Delhi. His brother's family, who are based in Goregaon, wanted a female help for household chores but were unable to find one of their choice in Mumbai.
On Tuesday, Sharma boarded the Duranto Express from Delhi with the teenaged girl. Around 4pm on Wednesday, the duo reached Mumbai Central. "During the train journey, the teenaged girl befriended a fellow traveller from Rajasthan and confided that she did not wish to work in Mumbai. The co-traveller complained to us after the train terminated at Mumbai Central," said senior inspector Rajendra Trivedi, Mumbai Central GRP.
Sharma and the teenaged girl were brought to the Mumbai Central GRP outpost. The girl was sent for a medical examination which did not reveal any injuries. She was then sent to the Child Welfare Committee's care.
Sharma was then arrested for pushing a minor into child labour.
