MUMBAI: The opposition in the Maharashtra legislative assembly upset with the special package announced for Vidarbha staged a walkout.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan who was replying to a discussion on the devastation in Vidarbha by the heavy rainfall over the last two months had announced a relief package of Rs 1,835 crore.

BJP legislator Sudhir Mungantiwar said, ``Except for a few points the chief minister's speech reads like a Government Resolution.'' Nana Patole also of the BJP expressed disappointment as the CM did not announce a loan waiver. Chavan promised that the co-operatives department would rework the repayment of loans.

Congress legislator Yashomati Thakur said the rehabilitation of people from 2007-2013 was yet to happen and the CM had not mentioned anything for salt-pan lands. Chavan replied that a different package was being worked out for it. He also said that separate aid would be given to municipal councils. Vijay Wadettiwar who had initiated the discussion said the government must give at least Rs 15,000 per hectare for rice as compensation.

In the legislative council, Pandurang Phundkar (BJP) urged the administration not to make fun of the flood affected people. "The compensation should match the recent price hike and inflation and should not be based on decade old rules."
