Anti-bribe platform gets a Hindi version

MUMBAI: One of the country's most widely used crowdsourcing initiatives in India, I Paid a Bribe is now set to launch a desi avatar. The anti-corruption platform encourages ordinary citizens to report details of the bribery they face, which department was involved as well as if they received a public service or good without needing to resort to a bribe.

The platform till now has functioned through its website Ipaidabribe.com and has received over 2.5 million hits and had 22,000 persons reporting bribes in various forms across 466 cities. One can grasp a better sense of what this means if we say that citizens reported bribes worth Rs 175. 24 crores exchanging hands since the initiative was first launched in 2010.

The non-profit organization behind the initiative, Janaagraha will now unveil a Hindi website called "Maine Rishwat DI" ( http://hindi.ipaidabribe.com) with the purpose of reaching out to a wider base of citizens. IPAB will also launch dedicated mobile phone applications to ensure that citizens can report their crime from anywhere.

Despite its shortcomings given that it reflects only what citizens report, the information received plays a crucial role in drawing up trends of where the most bribes are sought or pockets where bribes routinely occur. For instance, the data trends from the bribes currently reported show that most bribes are sought by the police, followed by the stamp and registration department and municipal services. In the absence of any other reliable data in the area of bribery, such crowdsourced mechanisms could go a long way to show the extent of bribery in India as well as devise ways to eliminate it.
