Snarls were reported between Goregaon and Vile Parle till night. With paver blocks coming off near the Oberoi mall flyover and public works department (PWD) carrying out pothole-repair work in Vile Parle, motorists had a tough time. Some complained about being stuck in a jam for two to three hours.
The south-bound stretch of WEH was chock-a-block since 8.40am. "I took 75 minutes to travel from Borivli to Kherwadi around 9am. There was a lot of congestion between Kandivli and Malad," said a graphic designer. Till late in the afternoon, vehicles crawled from Jogeshwari flyover till the Andheri flyover.
The snarls weren't restricted to peak hours. At 5pm, which is non-peak hour on the south-bound stretch of WEH, motorists were stuck for a long time between Andheri flyover and the domestic airport . Backlogs were reported till Bandra (E). WEH traffic also spilled over on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
"I got on to the WEH at Goregaon at 6.30pm. An hour later, I hadn't even reached Andheri," said automobile engineer Rajib Baruah. Maximum snarls were reported between Andheri and Vile Parle due to construction of an underpass. Additional traffic policemen were deployed at this spot for bandobast. "We have requested the PWD to repair potholes at night, but in vain," said a senior official.
BMC sets sights on overloaded trucks
The BMC has decided to ask the traffic police and the regional transport office (RTO) to crack down on overloaded heavy vehicles as the roads are not meant to cope with the load, resulting in potholes. Civic officials said they will request the RTO and the traffic police department to post their staff at toll posts so that the vehicles coming into the city can be checked for the load they are carrying before being allowed entry.
