CHENNAI: The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai will start manufacturing air-conditioned EMU coaches for Mumbai suburban network this year. This will be the first time that the factory would be making such coaches for suburban trains.

"The three-phase ACEMU coaches for Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) phase-II have been designed for the first time on LHB [Linke Hoffman Busch] platform with stainless steel body," ICF general manager Rakesh Misra said after hoisting the national flag at the factory as part of the on Independence Day celebrations on Thursday.

He said, "Two prototype rakes each having 12 coaches are under manufacturing."

Misra said the ICF had produced 20 fully furnished LHB EOG coaches and planned to manufacture 45 more coaches in the current year.

Last year, the ICF manufactured 1,620 coaches, an all-time record.

The ICF received the Golden Peacock Environment award for the year 2013 for several green initiatives at the factory.

Railways have decided to switch to Linke Hoffman Busch design for its long distance and suburban train coaches from indigenous designs of the ICF which was being used so far. The move comes after it was found that the LHB coaches offer more passenger comfort and safety.
