MUMBAI: Good spell of monsoon has come as great relief for the drought affected Maharashtra. In June the state government had to rope in 2,800 water tankers as against 5,547 water tankers pressed in to quench the thirst of people in the parched regions of the state.

"There is significant (nearly 50 per cent) reduction in number of tankers pressed in to services for supplying water to the drought affected areas. The situation will improve further as monsoon season progresses. Hardly any villages will have to be dependent on water tankers for the supply of water," Milind Mhaisakr, secretary, relief and rehabilitation department said, adding, "Despite good spell of rains in most of the areas the relief and rehabilitation work started by the government to tackle drought situation continues."

According to the Mantralaya officials the state government incurred expenditure of Rs 25 crore for tankers would now come down to Rs 12 crore as fewer tankers will be required to meet the water requirement of the drought affected villages.
