"There are thousands of dabbawalas in the city who roam around in various areas whole day. They can be of great help. We have asked them to become our ears and eyes. We also insisted that they should be on alert so that no one could plant anything in their dabbas which may later turn into an untoward incident or terror strike," said Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south region). Prakash (44), who has been organizing meetings with public and social activists, said that the dabbawalas reach to hundreds of commercial establishments and visits equal number of residences, know about a person and area's psychology much more better than others. "We have taught them on how to recognize/identify a suspicious man or activity in their surroundings. The police think they can become our foot soldiers who visit to many places including police stations and commercial hubs. We also showed them a presentation on terror strike and the methods to tackle it," added Prakash.
The police officers, who were present in the meeting, also exchanged their contact details with the dabbawalas and assured to conduct monthly meetings with them. "Not only terrorists, they can provide information about robbers, criminals and anti-social elements in the area. They will be rewarded for their help to the police and their service to the Mumbaikars," added a senior officer.
