Friday showers bring traffic to a crawl for 6 hours

MUMBAI: Heavy rainfall led to water-logging and traffic jams in many parts of the city on Friday. Potholes at many places added to the miseries of motorists.

The traffic police said the situation was bad in low-lying areas of the western suburbs and between Matunga and Sion, where they struggled the entire day to clear traffic.

They claimed they ensured normal traffic flow in other parts of the city after a few hours.

"Fewer vehicles were on the roads due to the heavy rain. The water-logging and potholes created traffic jams at some places but we cleared roads by evening at badly-affected areas," said deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pratap Dighavkar.

The police got reports of water-logging and traffic jams from 1pm till evening.

They closed roads or diverted traffic following the water-logging at some places.

The traffic police roped in radio stations and sent out text messages to warn motorists about water-loggings and inform them about alternative routes.
