MUMBAI: Heavy rains hit suburban and long-distance railway services in Mumbai on Friday. While Central Railway cancelled 33 services, Western Railway withdrew 55 suburban services, besides canceling and rescheduling several long-distance services due to problems between Virar-Nalasopora and at Valsad in Gujarat.

Services were suspended between Virar and Nalasopora from 1pm to 2pm due to waterlogging. They resumed with speed restrictions. WR public relations officer Nitin David said trains originated and terminated at Vasai road station during this period.

Dahisar commuter Ajay Shah said, "Services were badly hit as there was no train to Churchgate for almost 25 minutes. Thereafter, I boarded a fast train, which took 45 minutes to reach Andheri , as against the normal time of 18 minutes."

On CR, 33 suburban trains were cancelled and 18 diverted due to water-logging at Thane. CR public relations officer A K Singh said, "Tracks were flooded on the Up and Down slow line between Diva and Mumbra from 9.55am to 10.30am, holding up four locals. Water-logging was again reported from 10.55am to 11.50am due to which two locals were held up. CR had to divert slow line services to the fast line between Diva and Thane."

Commuters at Kalva and Mumbra stations were left stranded for a few hours as many fast trains do not halt there. Mahesh Sontakke, a Thane commuter, said, "Around noon, commuters endlessly waited for slow trains, but there was no announcement about the problem at Dombivli. After waiting for 30 minutes, I switched platforms and boarded a special fast train for Thane."

Another commuter, Sandeep Deshmukh, said, "The frequency of Down trains was normal. But there was no train for Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus at Kalyan station around 11.30 am. Since the trains were crowded, I took leave and returned home."

On the Harbour line too, trains were late, Rajesh V, a Nerul commuter, said. "I took at train for CST around 1pm. It was late by around 30 minutes ," he said.

A CR official said, "Continuous rain, even if the tide is low, is bound to create problems because the capacity of storm water drains in municipal areas is low. Despite incessant rain, services were not hit as badly as is it assumed. One has to understand that tracks are bound to get flooded if peripheral areas also witness waterlogging."

Long-distance trains were hit following heavy rain in Gujarat. A WR spokesman said, "Rail movement was affected in the morning due to waterlogging on tracks and breaches in a bridge between Atul and Pardi stations near Valsad." Services were suspended from early morning to 1.20pm. WR suspended 10 long-distance trains, including the Surat-Mumbai Flying Ranee, Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Karnavati Express, Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad air-conditioned double-decker Express. Many services did not operate between Surat and Mumbai. WR said many trains, including the Rajdhani Express, ran late by several hours.
