Doctors move tribunal over Maharashtra Public Service Commission's 'flawed' selection process

MUMBAI: Three forensic medicine doctors from two state-run medical colleges have moved the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) against the Maharashtra Public Service Commission ( MPSC)'s "flawed shortlisting criteria" for the appointment of professors in the state's medical colleges.

Eight of the 12 candidates who had applied for the open category position were rejected, said the doctors, adding that three of the selected four candidates were already working as professors and had informed the MPSC that they didn't want to compete for the post. "Yet, the MPSC didn't consider other candidates, thus giving the fourth candidate a clear walkover," the protesting doctors have alleged.

A few months ago, a controversy had erupted over the recruitment of deans of Nair and Sion hospitals. The MPSC's selection criteria had come under scanner even at that time.

"The MPSC could have clearly given a chance to other deserving candidates who met the required criteria," said Dr Vipul Ambade, one of the professors who has approached the MAT.

Of the eight candidates whose candidature was rejected, seven were told that they did not fit the MPSC's interview criteria; one candidate was found exceeding the age limit.

The MPSC was also supposed to give preference to a woman candidate for the open category post. But a female professor from Akola, Dr Anindya Mukherjee, also did not make the cut. She is among the three doctors who have approached the MAT.

P Adsule, deputy secretary, MPSC, said, "It is only after fixing the interviews that we learnt that the shortlisted candidates have already been promoted. We were not informed by any of the candidates nor did they withdraw their candidature."

He added that changes in shortlisting criteria cannot be made at the eleventh hour. "Also, it is wrong to say that the only candidate who will ultimately come for the interview will get a walkover. His name will be recommended only if he is selected by the committee," he said.
