MUMBAI: Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad civic polls witnessed 63.41 per cent voter turnout. The voting for the civic body was held on Sunday. Meanwhile the tension in the region escalated on the voting day as Congress candidate Shamrao Mukale died on Sunday morning. Following complaints of uneasiness the Congress candidate was admitted to local hospital on Friday.

Sensing that law and order situation could take ugly turn due to sad demise of the Congress candidate, the state government immediately deployed additional forces to maintain peace in the area.

In fact the ruling DF alliance ministers were seen taking pot shots at each other in the civic elections as Congress and NCP are contesting against each other. The outcome of elections will be important for heavyweights of region including home minister R R Patil, rural development minister Jayant Patil (both from NCP) and senior Congress leader Patangrao Kadam, who holds crucial relief and rehabilitation and forest ministry in the DF government
