MUMBAI: The resident of Chembur have started a signature campaign to reduce dumping of the city's solid waste at the Deonar dumping ground.

The dumping is the oldest in the city and has outlived its economic life. The BMC had announced its plans to close the dumping ground in phases which is to be completed by 2025.

"We have been suffering due to the uncontrolled and mismanaged dumping of waste by the BMC. Some years ago the BMC informed there would be a partial closure, a landfill and processing of 2000 tonnes per day (TPD) of waste. But they are dumping approximately 6000 TPD of waste resulting in increased pollution and ill-health to thousands of people living in the nearby localities. We are fighting to stop this. We want the BMC to send only 2000 TPD of waste to the Deonar dumping ground so that it can be properly managed/processed," said Raj Kumar Sharma, a member of the advanced locality management group.

The residents have urged Mumbaikars to sign the petition in large numbers.
