Abu Jundal to be transferred to Taloja jail

MUMBAI: The Prison department authorities are busy reviewing security situation in and around Navi Mumbai's Taloja jail where they are thinking to shift 26/11 terror attacks suspct, Zabihuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal. He is currently lodged in an isolated cell at Mumbai's Arthur Road jail. The jail authorities on Tuesday informed the MCOCA court that they were thinking of shifting Jundal to Taloja jail.

The Prison department's decision came soon after Jundal threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike as he wanted to be kept in another barrack, which is not isolated. "This is a difficult thing we are still exploring how to do it. Last year, a bomb blast suspect was murdered in the Anda cell at Pune's Yerwada jail and hence the prison authorities are in no mood to take any risk," said a jail source.

The jail, which was built in 2004 and opened in 2006, is located around 50 km from Mumbai. Spread over 77 acres, it has an official capacity of 2,124 inmates. However, official say they can accommodate more than 4,000 inmates at a time. "The jail has 200 rooms on the ground, first and second floors as anda cell. We can keep 200 inmates in these cells at time. If transferred, Jundal will also be kept in one of these cells.

However, not a single anda cell has the facility of CCTV cameras," the source added. "Jundal, like Kasab, is a high risk inmate and his security is important since his trail is still on," he added.

Currently, those kept in Taloja jail are murder convict ganster-turned-politician Aruan Gawli who is serving life term, over a dozen accused including Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit and associates (2008 Malegaon blast case), suspended Gujarat inspector general, D G Vanzara, who is facing a fake encounter case and his accomplices. Besides them, the jail has a bunch of 120 Somali pirates too. In July 2010, extradited gangster Salem was taken from Arthur Road to Taloja after he fought with D-gang member Mustafa Dossa. Salem, who was shifted for "security reasons", is currently lodged in an anda cell. However, less than 100 police personnel (in one duty) have been posted at the jail to keep an eye on the inmates.
