Most of the candidates are former corporators who lost in the August 2012 civic elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Hemant Mhatre and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Dr Sushil Agarwal.
In the 94-member house, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could earlier nominate two members. However, before the nomination forms could be filled on April 5, the BJP corporator from Mira Road, Seema Jain resigned, bringing down the strength of corporators to 28. The civic administration is in a fix as to whether the BJP can still nominate two members. The civic administration is seeking the opinion of the state government.
The MBMC chief Suresh Kokani will later meet the leaders of the house to discuss the issue. The nomination of members will be placed before the general body meeting of the house to be held later this month.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) too has 28 corporators and can nominate one member. The NCP has nominated former corporators Bhagwati Sharma, Prakash Thakur, Prakash Dhubole and Mamta Moraes, one of whom will make it to the house.
Congress with 19 corporators can nominate one member. Eight candidates have filled their forms for one seat. They include former corporators Vasudev Munj, Anil Sawant, Dinesh Nalawade, Shanu Goyal, Laxman Jangam, Shafiq Khan, Chandrakant Mody and Vikas Mhatre.
The Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) together with 15 corporators can also nominate one member. Shiv Sena has nominated former corporator Danesh Patil for the seat.
