Special Investigating Team questions Congress leader Kripashankar Singh in disproportionate assets case

MUMBAI: The Special Investigating Team (SIT) of Mumbai police formed to probe the disproportionate assets case against senior congress leader Kripashankar Singh, on Monday grilled Singh at police headquarters at Crawford Market.

Singh who was accompanied by his two chartered accountants and bunch of files appeared before the SIT at Economic Offences Wing (EOW) office around 10 am and was in the office till late evening. Assistant commissioner of police Suhash Rane and three officers prima facie recorded Singh s statement in details. Police said Singh cooperated in the investigations and looked like he had come prepared with answers.

Sources said that the questioning session will continue on Tuesday and once Singh s statement is recorded the police have planned to call in his kin for questioning. Singh s son Narendra Mohan, his wife Malti Devi, son Narendra Mohan Singh, daughter-in-law Ankita, daughter Sunita and his son-in-law Vijay Pratap Singh. However police said that More than Singh, his son Narenra Mohan had huge transactions.

There are more cash transactions of Narendra than his father. Besides investing in properties he who was a pilot by profession had allegedly huge properties and has diverted his finances in bollywood. said an officer. SIT official said that they have already questioned more than 100 persons related including government officials and bollywood personalities in regards to various transactions. Sources said that SIT questioned Singh as the supreme court in its order had asked police to record Singh s statement. It had said that Singh should be given an opportunity to explain whatever the findings are. Said an officer.

The Supreme court in September had given the Mumbai police eight weeks time to complete the investigations. The SIT has already filed two status reports before the SC in a sealed cover which the court has not opened so far. The Bombay high court had this February directed the Mumbai police chief to personally monitor the probe against Singh. The PIL against Singh was filed by social activist Sanjay Tiwari in 2010 alleged that Singh who began his career as a vegetable vendor in 1973 in a span of two decade became one of the richest politician with a fleet of cars, properties and other assets in Mumbai.

In February police raided his properties including Sai Prasad co-operative housing society at Bandra east, Kingston-a commercial cum residential property upmarket of Hiranandani gardens at Powai and a palatial bungalow at Carter road in Bandra. Police seized documents pertaining to movable and immovable properties. During the raid police had also found unaccounted 400 cartridges of various bores belonging to the family. Police had registered a separate case of arms act and the investigations was handed over to the Mumbai crime branch.We have completed the probe in the arms case and are awaiting the ballistic reports after which we will file the chargesheets. Said a senior official.
