MUMBAI: Mumbaikars are writ with indignation following recent hikes in public taxis and autorickshaws plying the city. The common refrain is that more money does not translate into better services. Their anger seems justified if the state of public transportation in India's financial capital is pitted against 26 other leading cities across the world including popular business cities such as New York, London and Paris. The analysis, Cities of Opportunity 2012, is an initiative of the PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Partnership for New York City and is in its fifth year.
The survey assessed public transport networks across the cities and found that Mumbai (the only Indian city included in the survey) ranked among the worst six cities for the internal mobility provided to citizens. The only cities worse than Mumbai were Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles, Sydney and Istanbul. Elements of public transport systems were assessed for their modernity and efficiency by gauging systemic coverage, connectivity, reliability and safety among other factors.
It measured mass transit coverage in terms of kilometres of mass transit track for every 100 square kilometres of developed or developable land area and pegged Mumbai as the eighth-worst of the lot.
There is no denying that Mumbai's creaky network transports a higher number of people daily than other cities, but such reports reiterate the need for more investment in public transportation. Many of the indicators used in the survey--bike sharing, bus rapid transit systems, trolleys etc are non-existent in the city and perhaps point to the needfor some out-of-the-box approaches towards easing the congested roads and railways.
