The nomination of Congress MLC Sharad Ranapise was withdrawn by its proposer MLC Ram Hari Rupunwar while that of Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe was withdrawn by its proposer MLC Anil Parab also of the Sena. When it was the turn of Nimbalkar, NCP MLC Sunil Tatkare stood up and moved the motion and deputy chairman Vasant Dawakhare who was in the chair put it to vote. The motion was passed unanimously and Nimbalkar was elected unopposed.
The former MLA from Phaltan was elected to the upper house by MLAs in July 2010. His term as MLC expires in July 2016. The NCP had earlier this week engineered the ouster of former chairman and Congress MLC Shivajirao Deshmukh. Congress has 21 members, NCP 28, BJP 12, Shiv sena 7, PWP 1, Lok Bharati 1, People's Reublican Party 1 and ther are seven Independents in the upper house.
Sources said Sena's Gorhe had filed her nomination to expose the unholy nexus between the BJP and the NCP. The Sena is seething at the humiliation it is being routinely meted out by the BJP which now the larger number of MLAs in the state.
The NCP had been assured support by the BJP to ensure the victory of its candidate Nimbalkar. However, a telephonic conversation between chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray changed the entire scenario.
It is learnt that both the BJP and the NCP will support the Sena candidate for the Bandra assembly by-election. Congress' Narayan Rane, who had briefly been chief minister when he was with the Shiv Sena has indicated his intent to contest the election from here. The by-election has been prompted following the death of Sena MLA Prakash Sawant. Rane had quit the Sena protesting Uddhav's leadership.
After Nimbalkar's election, Gorhe in her congratulatory speech in the council said she had filed her nomination as the BJP had not put up any candidate. As the Sena-BJP are natural allies it was expected that she would win, she said. ``I withdrew from the contest following a telephonic conversation between chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray last evening.'' Sources said the BJP has assured the post of the deputy speaker in the legislative assembly to Vijay Auti of the Shiv Sena. Auti is an MLA from Parner in Ahmednagar district.
The Congress withdrew its candidate as it simply did not have the numbers to win the election.
