HC contempt notices to Raj and Shelar on illegal banners

MUMBAI: Bombay High Court on Thursday issued show cause notice for contempt of court to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Bharatiya Janata Party's Mumbai chief Ashiah Shelar in respect their personal undertakings not to encourage party workers to put up illegal banners and posters.

The court also issued also issued notices to MNS's Bala Nandgaonkar, BJP's Mukund Kulkarni and NCP's Shivaji Garje who gave undertakings on behalf of the parties. The notices are returnable on May 7.

A bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Anil Menon hearing a clutch of public interest litigation regarding inaction of civic bodies to remove illegal banners and hoardings. Court was informed of breach of undertaking mainly by MNS and BJP across the city.

"We prima facie find that individual political parties who gave solemn undertaking are indulging in illegality by displaying banners and posters without permissions, " said the bench. The court has also sought responses of Congress and Shiv Sena who have yet to respond on whether they will give similar undertakings.
