MUMBAI: Maharashtrians all across will be celebrating Gudi Padwa (New Year) today by consuming the bittersweet concoction made of neem leaves, which is believed to purify the body . But the most eagerly awaited treat is the sugary gathis, which is unique to this particular festival. And this year, the markets are flooded with new decorative varieties of gathis with dry fruits, mirror, coloured stones, meena and zardozi works. And even though steeply priced -between '700 and '2500 -the high-end gathis are quite in demand.

Deepak Gaikwad, a shop owner from Babu Genu Chowk said, "During Gudi Padwa, people usually use big gathi strings either as garlands to honour deities or for decorative purposes at temples and homes. Every year we try to introduce something new. This year we thought of using dry fruits to decorate the gathis. These gathis have found many takers and are quite a hit. On an average, we sell around 25 strings of dry fruit gathis every day ." Gaikwad reasoned that this year, the gathis are expensive because of the quantity and quality of dry fruits used. "It also takes a lot of effort to string the gathis together," he added.

Apart from the gathis with dry fruits, the market is also flooded with the ones which sport intricate ornamental designs on them. "We hired specialised artisans from Ahmednagar and Nanegaon for Gudi Padwa. The mirror work and coloured stone gathis have found many takers to decorate their offices and homes," said Chaitanya Dhembe, a city shop owner at Mandai.

Apart from the new varieties, the regular white, kesar, lemon, mango and rose flavoured gathis are also quite popular. Priced between `10 and `1200 per string, these gathis are usually ordered in bulk.

The preparation for making this sweet treat begins way in advance. Mahesh Dhembe, who has been selling gathis for the last 65 years near Tulsi Baug said, "We begin making gathis since Holi, as the procedure to attain the perfect flavour, shape and size takes quite some time.We start selling them two weeks prior to the Gudi Padwa festival. Almost 600-700 kgs of gathis is manufactured everyday and during the entire festival period we manage to sell about 40,000 kgs.
