Flyer held with Rs 10L drug kept in helmets

MUMBAI: A woman from Malawi in southeast Africa was arrested on Thursday for allegedly carrying 9.9 kg of ephedrine—a drug used to concoct narcotic substances—concealed in helmets. Customs officials pegged the value of the contraband around Rs 9.9 lakh in the international market.

The accused, Poya Thembisile, was about to catch a flight for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs department were alerted to the persistent woofing of their sniffer dog, Anju. The drug had been tucked into helmets kept in the woman's check-in baggage. The woman had arrived in Mumbai from Hyderabad.

The seized substance also has a number of legitimate uses due to which the government regulates it supply under the NDPS Act.
