MUMBAI: A 45-year-old tribal widow from Wada in Thane district has been arrested for allegedly giving a contract to kill her step-brother as a human sacrifice for prosperity.
Shyamla Bujad bumped off Ladku Warta (52) a farmer on May 31 with the help of seven men from the Chikale village where they all stayed.
Warta was assaulted with swords and iron rods when he was returning home from his field in the night. He died on the spot.
The killers were allegedly paid Rs 10,000 for the job by Bujad.
While the Wada police registered a case of murder against unknown persons, investigations led to the sister.
Bujad who lost her husband and son to illness in quick succession told the police that a local woman astrologer had advised her to kill Warta for financial prosperity.
She was told by the astrologer that after Warta's death his field would be handed over to her by Warta's wife and daughter.
While Bujad struggled for a living, her brother managed by working on his field. Police are investigating how the widow got the cash to pay the contract killers.
While Bujad has been send to judicial custody, three men have been remanded to police custody till June 17.
Four others are absconding.
They have all been booked for murder (IPC section 302). The police are on the look-out for the astrologer who advised human sacrifice. The anti-superstition laws will be applied after the astrologer is questioned.
