On June 6, Varsha Bhanushali (36) was caught red-handed at her Janki Heritage building flat, near Maxus Mall, Bhayander, while accepting Rs 50,000. The complainant had approached Bhanushali to help get civic permission for raising the height of his shop located in Hanuman Nagar. Bhanushali was the ward committee chairperson.
Bhanushali had allegedly demanded Rs 1.60 lakh. Following the complaint with the Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), a trap was laid at Bhanushali's flat where she took the first instalment of Rs 50,000.
While the police did not recover anything from her house, cash and valuables were found in the locker of her bank in Bhayander. Sources said that soon after the raid, cash and valuables were thrown out of the flat. The security guard of the building has been missing since the raid took place. Sources said that the cash and valuables thrown out of the flat may have been taken away by the security guard. The CCTV footage of June 6 captured in the building was allegedly destroyed.
Bhanushali has been remanded to police custody till June 11.
