MUMBAI: The Kandivli police arrested a 30-year-old man and his wife, for pushing their 10-year-old nephew into child labour and thrashing him. The boy has been sent to the children's shelter.

The two accused have been identified as Walim Shaikh and Farida. Shaikh brought the boy to Mumbai from UP on the pretext of giving him a good education as the boy had several siblings and his parents were finding it tought to make ends meet. But after bringing the boy to the city, Walim and his wife forced the minor to do housework. Engaged in the profession of setting imitation jewellery, the accused also forced his nephew to assist him. Shaikh and his wife beat up the boy when he made mistakes while working with his uncle or when performing chores. "This had been going on for three-four months. A neighbour recently lnoticed the boy's injuries and informed us. We raided the couple's home on Kandivli Link Road on Thursday and rescued the child," said a senior inspector.
