MUMBAI: For the first time in the Salman Khan hit-and-run case, three witnesses have identified the actor as being in the car that ran over at least five people in Mumbai early on September 28, 2002. One was killed and four injured in the incident.

"I was sleeping outside the bakery when I heard a sound. I saw a car and then its wheels ran over my left leg. Then, people told Salman Khan 'niche utro' (get out). He got off the right side of the car and people caught him," said Muslim Shaikh, the first witness to depose in the sessions court here on Tuesday.

He also told the court that he received threat calls on his cellphone on Sunday.

The second witness, Manu Khan, said Salman exited from the driver's side and was drunk; after coming out, he fell down, before getting up and fleeing. The third witness did not remember the side of the car the actor came out of. All three witnesses were injured in the incident. They were traced by the police from UP, Karnataka and Mumbai after an extensive search.

After the cross-examination of the trio was completed, judge D W Deshpande adjourned the hearing to May 19, when more witnesses are expected to depose.

The trial began last week, with the deposition of a 'panch witness' (before whom police seals are opened). Tuesday's proceedings began before a packed courtroom at 11.15am, and continued till 5.45pm, barring a 45-minute lunch break at 2pm. Lawyers, litigants and court staff made a beeline for the courtroom. Policemen and Salman's entourage told people to refrain from taking pictures of the actor, who was seated in the dock. In a blue-white floral shirt and jeans, Salman was accompanied by his sisters, a bodyguard and a few other people, who stood next to the dock. He stood up a few times during the proceedings and paced around in the dock.

Outside the court premises, there was commotion as an altercation took place between members of the actor's entourage and photojournalists, who later said their equipment were destroyed.

Defence advocate Srikant Shivde pointed out a contradiction in witness Shaikh's statement and said that in his earlier statement to the police, he had not revealed that he had seen Salman getting out of the car. Shaikh stated that he had not deposed in a court earlier, but after being repeatedly pointed out by the defence that he had deposed in the Bandra magistrate's court before, admitted to it.

Witness Manu said his leg was stuck under a wheel of the car. He said that after Salman and his bodyguard got down, a third person got off the back of the car. Then, people from the bakery caught Salman, he added. The defence said this was the first time in the case that such revelations have been made and so are a "material improvement" (improvised statement).

Mohammed Kalim, the third witness, who was injured in the leg during the incident, denied allegations that the witnesses had falsely deposed to claim more compensation from Salman.
