Several families that were headed out for summer holidays on Sunday were badly hit as most trains were either cancelled, short-terminated or diverted via long detours. "It is very frustrating as our train will detour via Panvel, Lonavla and Pune. It will take us longer to reach our destination" said a passenger on the Madgaon Mandovi Express on Sunday. The Mangala Express, Netravati Express and the Mangalore Matsyagandha Express were among trains diverted through this route. Seven trains, including the Goa-bound Konkan Kanya Express were cancelled on Sunday.
CR's chief public relations officer Narendra Patil, said the diversions were made to ensure an optimum number of services were not terminated or suspended. "We ensured that the trains were diverted either from Panvel or via Pune-Miraj. We also made frequent announcements regarding delays, diversions and cancellations," he said. Konkan Railway spokesperson Vaishali Patange said, "Some trains were cancelled and diverted on Sunday, but normalcy may be restored on Monday."
Left with no other option, most travelers streamed into MSRTC bus depots at Thane and Panvel or approached private bus operators. Others simply postponed or cancelled their plans.
MSRTC officials at Thane said they had not made any announcements about running extra buses but were ready to operate these based on demand. Buses along Konkan routes were already running to capacity forcing many travelers to approach private bus operators. The latter are reportedly making a killing charging exorbitant fares.
A family waiting at Diva that wanted to attend a family function in Ratnagiri said they would travel on a private bus paying a premium as their plans to board the Dadar Ratnagiri Express in the afternoon had been thrown off. "Ideally, we could have reached our native place in Rs 200 but will now be paying Rs 500 per ticket for the trip," said Thane resident Sunil Gawde.
Another family from Dombivli said shelving plans would mean heavy losses as they had already planned a holiday with their extended family in Konkan. This family said they had hired a cab. A travel agent in Dombivli said buses running in the Konkan region were packed adding that available seats were likely to go for a premium. AC bus fares priced at Rs 1,000 could likely cost Rs 1,500-1,800 depending on demand, said an agent.
