MUMBAI: Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has requested the centre to include representatives from the state while sending a delegation to the European Union for talks on lifting the ban on the import of mangoes.

The state representative would be better placed to argue against the ban, said Chavan.

The Alphonso mango is native to the Konkan region and Devgad in Ratnagiri district is known for the finest Alphonso mangoes.

The European Union has imposed a ban on the import of mangoes as they were found to be worm infested.

The ban has brought cheer to the local market as the price of mangoes has dropped to Rs 150 per dozen. Chavan said the mangoes that are sent to the US are first processed at Nashik ensuring their quality. A similar processing machine will be set up at Vashi (APMC market) at a cost of Rs 20 crore,'' he said.

While traders in the UK had protested the ban as it would result in huge losses, the Europeran Union has been firm that the ban will not be lifted.

Chavan has appealed to farmers and exporters not to panic as more mangoes may be exported to the Middle East.
