MUMBAI: A minor fire broke out on the first floor of the cardio vascular thoracic surgery (CVTS) building of the civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel on Saturday afternoon.

Although there were no casualties, the authorities were worried because the building has three intensive care units, mainly for heart patients. Seven pediatric patients were admitted in the ICUs located on the second, third and fourth floors.

Fire brigade officials said the fire started in an air-conditioning duct near the pathology laboratory around 3.35 pm and was doused within 15 minutes.

KEM Hospital dean Dr Subhangi Parkar said, "The situation could have been disastrous if the engineering staff of the hospital hadn't acted swiftly and shut the electric supply to the building. Fatalities could have been huge as the building mainly has patients suffering cardiac and respiratory cases." In all, there were 133 patients in the building.

Dr Parkar said an inquiry would be instituted into the cause of fire. She added that the ongoing civil work was in no way connected with the short circuit.
