MUMBAI: A 24 year old army man who called up a NCP leader and used to abuse him over some previous rivalry was arrested by the Anti Extortion cell of city crime branch on Tuesday.

Accused identified as Janardhan Singarputle who was arrested from his home town in Nanded have been booked under IPC sections of threatening, Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace and Information technology act. Singarputle was picked up after the city police informed the army headquarters in Assam regiment where he was officially attached.

The complaint was filed by a senior NCP leader from Bhusaval who is carrying several projects of urban development and upliftment of backward classes. Complainant stated that last month he was continuous getting missed calls and blank smses. On occasions he would call the leader in odd hours and abuse him without identifying. The politician failed to understand his talks but he said that he was threatening with dire consequences.'' Said an officer.

The leader approached Joint commissioner of police (crime) Sadanand Date and lodged a complaint. As the caller was threatening, the case was handed over to the AEC which handles extortion related calls. Police tracked the cell number to Nanded. A team was send to Nanded from where Singarputle was picked up . Police are now trying to find the reason for his threats but prima facie it appears a old rivalry or grudge.
