MUMBAI: Many drivers and conductors of the transport undertaking may not turn up for work on Tuesday when the city will celebrate Bhaubeej.

On Friday, union leader Sharad Rao dropped hints that BEST's staffers may bunk off work to protest against non-payment of Diwali bonus. "We may also move the industrial court, if required, on the bonus issue. I may meet senior BEST officials on November 8 to discuss the issue," said Rao. "It could affect the running of buses on the festival day. We have planned to operate 240 additional buses on 87 routes in Mumbai, Thane, Mira Road and Navi Mumbai to cater to the festive rush during Bhaubeej," said a BEST official. The BEST administration has warned employees against taking part in any "agitation". "Our drivers and conductors are committed to give service on special days like Bhaubeej. We will not tolerate any kind of mass bunking. Such staffers are likely to face disciplinary action," the official said.

A commuter rights activist demanded that Rao should be booked under the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act. BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta told TOI that the transport undertaking was incurring huge losses and it was not possible to disburse bonus.
