Private buses will have to display complaint number

MUMBAI: State governments will have to ensure that all public and private buses plying passengers carry 24 X 7 monitored numbers on which passengers or bystanders can call or SMS about possible violations which could pose a risk of accident.

This is an advisory sent out by the ministry of road transport and highways, following the horrific bus accident involving a Volvo AC luxury coach which caught fire in the wee hours of October 30, near Mehboob Nagar, Andhra Pradesh. The coach fire claimed 45 passengers.

Display of such a helpline number will now be required as a pre-requisite for bus operators to obtain a permit. Ministry officials said individual states should notify the provision at the earliest.

The ministry has also requested the NATRIP under the Ministry of Heavy Industry, which has specialized accident crash investigation vehicle and team, to enquire into the Andhra accident and suggest ways to prevent such incidents in the future.

It is essential that the enquiry be completed at the earliest and recommendations drawn up implemented.
