MUMBAI: A recently appointed officer from the Dahanu police station was arrested by the Thane Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for accepting a bribe of Rs 3000 from a transporter on Monday.

Sub-inspector Toufiq Sayyad, 28, was remanded to police custody till November 15 by a Palghar court on Tuesday.

Sayyad was appointed at the Dahanu police station a few months ago; this is his first posting. He demanded a bribe from a transporter, Baburao Patil, who owns a tempo. Patil was supposed to pay up every month.

"Patil complained to us, following which we laid a trap. Sayyad was to meet Patil in Dahanu for collecting this month's sum," said an official. Sayyad was booked under sections 7, 13 (1)(b), 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

He was suspended with immediate effect from the Thane rural police force.
