MUMBAI: A five-year-old boy from Malad lost vision in his right eye when a cracker burst near him on Sunday. Sunny Srivastava was not bursting crackers, but watching Diwali festivities when a splinter hit him.

Sunny's right eye started bleeding profusely after which his parents rushed him to KEM Hospital in Parel. The doctors initially could not diagnose the damage immediately as the child was in too much pain. "He was taken for a CT scan to check the damage," said a doctor from the ophthalmology department.

The scan revealed that the impact of the splinter was so intense that Sunny's eyeball had ruptured. "The damage extended to his retina, tearing it badly," said the doctor. The child was operated upon on Tuesday. Doctors advised the family that the child's eyeball be removed from the socket as he had no vision. The family turned down the suggestion. The hospital has treated three other cases of minor injuries to the eyes.

Among other cases, a 68-year-old woman from Raigad had to be brought to Byculla's JJ Hospital after a cracker splinter hit her eye while she was walking on the road. The mishap has left her with a blood clot in the eye and blurred vision. Professor and head of JJ's ophthalmology department, Dr Ragini Parekh, said they would operate on her soon and hopes she will regain her normal vision. The hospital has treated several cracker-related injuries over the weekend. A 7-year-old child also sustained a corneal abrasion while bursting crackers though there is no danger to his vision. Dr Parikh said another patient was brought to the hospital with corneal tear after private hospitals turned him away. "Many private hospitals did not have doctors during Diwali, so the patient was referred to us."

A boy from Sion Koliwada suffered 25% burns to his face and left hand while trying to burst crackers. Adeel Shaikh (14), admitted to Sion Hospital, will need a skin grafting first and a cosmetic surgery later.
